Skylar Darrow is currently a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) student at California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, with a strong commitment to social justice and advocacy for marginalized communities. Their background includes extensive experience in crisis intervention, harm reduction, and advocacy for survivors of domestic violence and LGBTQ+ refugees, which has solidified their passion for social work.
Before joining the Redwood Institute of Social Research, Skylar held various roles that fostered their ability to provide culturally sensitive care and support to diverse populations. Skylar founded an LGBTQ+ resource center at their community college, creating a vital space for LGBTQ+ students to access support and community resources. As a Domestic Violence Client Advocate, they provided essential services such as safety planning, case management, and crisis intervention, focusing on empowering survivors. Additionally, In their work as a Volunteer Caseworker, Skylar focused on assisting LGBTQ+ refugees from the SWANA (Southwest Asia and North Africa) region. They provided culturally sensitive support and guidance to refugees navigating resettlement challenges, helping them access essential services and integrate into new communities.
Skylar's academic and professional interests extend to research and policy analysis, where they are particularly focused on issues of social and economic inequity, human rights, and community empowerment. They are excited to contribute to the Redwood Institute’s mission by bringing their research skills and practical experience to support impactful social research and advocacy initiatives.
In their free time, Skylar is an avid explorer of art, history, and cultural studies, often delving into creative art projects and current events. They enjoy engaging with local art communities, and continuously expanding their knowledge on social and cultural topics. Skylar is committed to using their education and experience to effect meaningful change in the field of social work.
